October: Northland and Auckland News from Sinda, Jana and Sally

posted in: Auckland, Northland 0

Whangarei members came together this month for a lovely lively catch up. We had the pleasure of a visit from Katrina Andrews, Whangarei Encore coordinator, who took us through some land based moves and gave us an overview of the programme. The next Encore course starts soon in Whangarei and there are now just a few places available. It is very bountiful in Northland, Members went home with a beautiful orchid stem from Robyn our Northland volunteer and avocados from our member Lyn. Cafe meetings are always nice for a catch up. Waitakere and Warkworth members got together recently over a cuppa and a cake.

On a cold winter’s evening several members still braved the night to come and try their hand at flax weaving. We were lucky to have the wonderful Marama Piripi, Kaiwhakahaere from Breast and Cervical Screening in Manukau come and share her knowledge and skills with us. Marama made it all look so easy as after a few quick hand movements a flax flower soon bloomed from her fingers. Her students were not quite so fast but with a little guidance from Marama all had produced several flax flowers or putiputi to take home with them. Tradition says that your first putiputi be given away so if you are lucky you might just be given one.
